About the Program

The Perrysburg Schools Facility Dog Program first began at Perrysburg High School in 2019. Trained facility dogs are now placed in six of our schools with trained handlers – Perrysburg High School (Taft), Perrysburg Junior High School (Salts), Hull Prairie Intermediate (Kincaid), Toth Elementary School (Aspen), Frank Elementary School (Liv), and Woodland Elementary School (Angel). As of the 2025/2026 school year, there is one additional dog currently “in-training” within the school district at Fort Meigs Elementary School.

Perrysburg Schools Foundation helps fund the Facility Dog Program, including food, equipment, travel expenses and other needs, with the support of many individual and corporate donors, including Medical Mutual of Ohio, The Studer Select Team of the Danberry Co., Wellaroma, and Yark Chevrolet. The basic medical services for the dogs have graciously been donated by Perrysburg Animal Hospital, and all grooming services are donated by Plontzie’s in Perrysburg.

All of the facility dogs placed in the schools have gone through at least a year of specialty training. Each has the capacity to assist and participate in the school system to help support students via physical, social, cognitive and/or emotional assistance in schools/classrooms as well as in other public settings.

Each dog is hosted by one school employee. The host is who the dog lives with, and they take care of the dog during times when the dog is not working. Each school has school employees that are trained handlers. The handlers work with the dog during the school day in various settings and with all staff and students.

Information is shared with students and employees about interacting with the dogs and how the dogs support a positive learning environment. Dog-free and dog-friendly zones are set up in each school. The dogs work at school and rest in their host’s home each evening.

Perrysburg Schools Foundation matched the first $15,000 raised from other sources making a total of $30,000 which allowed Perrysburg Schools to secure the first three facility dogs for the district.
