At Hull Prairie Intermediate School, Physical Education (PE) teachers Kate Brown and Doug Kollman are redefining what it means to move, learn, and create. Through a generous grant from Perrysburg Schools Foundation, fifth and sixth grade students are embarking on a unique journey blending dance and gymnastics—two disciplines that strengthen the body while inspiring creativity.
By integrating these art forms into the PE curriculum, students are not only building core physical skills such as balance, coordination, and flexibility, but are also experiencing the joy of expressing themselves through movement. This innovative approach connects seamlessly with the school’s Creative Arts Program, ensuring that every child has access to a full spectrum of artistic and physical growth opportunities, regardless of outside experience or resources.
The new gymnastics mats, funded through the $14,688 grant, will transform the gym into a safe and supportive space where over 900 students may explore new movement possibilities. During the collaborative dance and gymnastics unit, students are learning concepts such as counter-tension, counter-balance, and rhythmic sequencing, ultimately creating original routines set to music. These performances are bringing together elements of music, mathematics, and social studies, illustrating the power of cross-curricular learning. With each sequence, students are assessed not just on technical skills, but on creativity, collaboration, and expression—skills that also resonate far beyond the class.
Over time, every Perrysburg student will benefit from this investment, experiencing an engaging, inclusive program that promotes physical literacy and artistic confidence.
