PJHS Orchestra Students at TSYO Concerts

Grants in Action | 2023/2024 School Year

Perrysburg Junior High School Orchestra Director Betsy Cranston wanted to provide a professional symphony experience for 7th and 8th grade orchestra students. She requested two grants through the Perrysburg Schools Foundation, 7th grade for $1,100 for 77 students and 8th grade for $725 for 50 students, for a total of $1,825 in grant funding to provide this experience for 127 students.

The orchestra students attended Toledo Symphony Young People’s Concerts during the past school year. 7th grade students learned more about the evolution of instruments through science and symphony as The Toledo Symphony and Imagination Station explored how the sounds of the orchestra came to be. Students participated in pre-concert and post-concert activities and lesson plans provided by The Toledo Symphony Education Department.

8th grade orchestra students attend the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring world renowned violinist, Rachel Barton Pine performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Students participated in pre-concert and post-concert activities related to the concert’s programming.

“We hope this experience enriched our students’ appreciation of music and encouraged them to continue to enroll in our orchestra program through their completion of high school,” shared Ms. Cranston.

The Perrysburg Schools Arts Council is charged with suggesting areas of funding from the Perrysburg Schools Foundation and its Campaign for the Arts that supports the visual and performing arts through student discovery, student experience, program growth and program sustainability.
